Yellow/Green Single Core Earth Cable (BV / BYJ / BVR / WDZ-BV)
Earth / Ground Cable
Green/yellow single-core copper protective conductor for earthing, bonding and equipment grounding
Earth cable, also called ground cable, is a single-core copper conductor with green/yellow insulation used as the protective conductor in an installation: from the main earthing terminal to the electrode, for bonding metalwork and pipes, and as the earth lead to equipment. We make it with solid, stranded or flexible copper and PVC, XLPE or LSZH insulation.
What is Earth / Ground Cable?
An earth cable does not carry load current in normal service. Its job is to give fault current a low-resistance path back to earth so that the protective device trips, and to hold exposed metalwork at earth potential. The green/yellow insulation is what marks it as the protective conductor, so it should never be used as a live or neutral wire.
Our factory table lists the earth cable in the same single-core constructions as house wire: BV (copper, PVC), BYJ (copper, XLPE), BVR (flexible copper, PVC), ZR-BV (fire retardant PVC), WDZ-BV (low smoke zero halogen) and NH-BV (mica tape, fire resistant). The conductor can be annealed or tinned copper: BV is a single solid wire up to 6 mm² and stranded above that; BVR uses more, thinner strands for earth leads with tight routing. Solid or stranded BV suits fixed earthing runs. If your standard names a conductor class (for example IEC 60228 Class 5), we confirm the strand construction before quoting.
Green/yellow BV and BVR are covered by our CCC certificate 2002010105016709 within its listed ranges (BV 450/750 V 1.5–240 mm², BVR 450/750 V 2.5–70 mm²). The other models on this page are not on a CCC or CB certificate we hold.
This page is only about the green/yellow protective conductor. For single-core wire in circuit colours, see Building Wire. For fine-stranded circuit wiring, see Flexible Electrical Wire. For the earth core built into a flat 2+1 cable, see Twin & Earth Cable.

Frequently asked questions about Earth / Ground Cable
Q.Why is earth cable green and yellow?
Green/yellow insulation identifies the protective (earth) conductor, so it is not confused with live or neutral conductors. Do not use green/yellow wire for anything other than earthing and bonding.
Q.Is earth cable the same as BV wire?
It is built the same way. Our earth cable is made as BV, BYJ, BVR and other single-core types; what makes it an earth cable is the green/yellow insulation and its use as the protective conductor.
Q.Should I choose solid or flexible earth cable?
Solid or stranded BV suits fixed earthing and bonding runs. BVR, with more and thinner strands, is easier to route and terminate for earth leads to panels and equipment. Our standard BVR is not an IEC 60228 Class 5 conductor; if your standard requires Class 5, state it and we confirm the construction.
Q.Is green/yellow earth cable CCC certified?
Green/yellow BV and BVR are covered within the ranges on CCC certificate 2002010105016709 (valid to 20 Apr 2028): BV 450/750 V 1.5–240 mm², BV 300/500 V 0.5–1 mm² and BVR 450/750 V 2.5–70 mm². BYJ, ZR-BV, WDZ-BV and NH-BV are not on it.
Q.What size of earth cable do I need?
It is set by your installation standard and the fault current of the circuit. We make 0.5 to 400 mm²; your designer should give the size, and we build to it.
Q.Do you make halogen-free earth cable?
Yes. WDZ-BV has low smoke zero halogen insulation. ZR-BV is fire retardant PVC and NH-BV adds a mica tape for fire resistance.
Q.Is tinned copper earth cable available?
Yes. The conductor can be annealed plain copper or tinned copper.
