Single Core PVC / XLPE Insulated Building Wire (BV, BYJ, BLV, THHN)
Building Wire
Single-core copper or aluminium wire for fixed installation in conduit, trunking and distribution boards
Building wire is single-core insulated wire pulled through conduit or laid in trunking for the fixed wiring of buildings: lighting and socket circuits, board tails and sub-circuit feeds. We make it with copper or aluminium conductors, PVC, XLPE or LSZH insulation, and a nylon-jacketed THHN / THWN version for projects written to North American sizes.
What is Building Wire?
Building wire is the single-core wire an electrician pulls into conduit or lays in trunking and then leaves in place for the life of the building. It has insulation only, no outer sheath, so it relies on the conduit, trunking or enclosure for mechanical protection. That is the main thing that separates it from the other pages in this range.
Our factory table lists four Chinese designations and one North American family. BV is copper with PVC insulation, BYJ is copper with XLPE insulation, BLV and BLYJ are the aluminium equivalents. THHN, THWN and THWN-2 are copper wire with PVC insulation and a nylon jacket, offered in AWG and kcmil sizes. On our BV parameter sheet, 1.5–6 mm² is a single solid wire and 10 mm² and above is stranded (7 to 61 wires); other conductor constructions are confirmed against the standard on your order.
BV and BLV are covered by our CCC certificate 2002010105016709 for the voltage and size ranges listed in the certificate table below. BYJ, BLYJ and THHN / THWN are not on a CCC or CB certificate we hold, so they are built and tested to the standard named on your order.
Choose this page for fixed wiring. If the wire needs tight routing or connects to panels and equipment, see Flexible Electrical Wire (BVR). If you want a sheathed two-core-plus-earth cable clipped to the surface or run in walls without conduit where local wiring rules permit, see Twin & Earth Cable. If you only need the green/yellow protective conductor, see Earth / Ground Cable.

Frequently asked questions about Building Wire
Q.What is the difference between BV and BYJ wire?
Both are single-core copper building wire. BV has PVC insulation rated 70 °C in service; BYJ has XLPE insulation rated 90 °C in service. Choose BYJ when the specification asks for XLPE or a higher conductor temperature.
Q.Is building wire the same as flexible wire?
No. BV building wire is a single solid wire up to 6 mm² and 7 to 61 thick strands above that, and is meant for fixed runs in conduit or trunking. BVR uses more, thinner strands (for example 19 × 0.41 mm at 2.5 mm²), so it is easier to route and terminate. For connection leads see our Flexible Electrical Wire page.
Q.Is your building wire CCC certified?
BV and BLV are, within the ranges on certificate CCC 2002010105016709 (valid to 20 Apr 2028): BV 450/750 V 1.5–240 mm², BV 300/500 V 0.5–1 mm² and BLV 450/750 V 2.5–300 mm². BYJ, BLYJ and THHN / THWN are not on that certificate. Sizes outside those ranges are built to the standard on your order.
Q.Do you make THHN wire?
Yes. THHN, THWN and THWN-2 are copper wire with PVC insulation and a nylon jacket, from 14 AWG solid up to 1500 kcmil stranded.
Q.Can I get aluminium building wire?
Yes. BLV is aluminium with PVC insulation and BLYJ is aluminium with XLPE insulation, in the same 0.5–400 mm² range as the copper types.
Q.Is low smoke halogen-free building wire available?
Yes. LSZH insulation is an option, and FR, FRLS, LSOH and LSHF versions are also produced. State the requirement on your inquiry.
Q.How is building wire packed?
Smaller sizes are usually packed in coils, larger sizes on drums. Tell us the coil or drum length and any printing you need on the wire and packaging.
